A quiet morning in Knysna was suddenly interrupted by tragedy when a tree came crashing down onto a vehicle, claiming the life of a 37-year-old woman.
The incident unfolded along Main Street, directly in front of the local police station, shortly before 8am on Wednesday. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at around 7:50am, responding to reports of a tree that had fallen onto a car, as reported by Algoa FM.
When first responders arrived, they found the woman still inside the vehicle.
According to police spokesperson Chris Spies, she was declared deceased at the scene, with her body only able to be recovered later in the morning, around 11am, as teams worked carefully to clear the wreckage.
A section of Main Street was temporarily closed while authorities managed the scene and removed debris, bringing traffic in the area to a halt.
Police have since opened an inquest docket to determine exactly what led to the incident.
While details remain under investigation, incidents like this are a sobering reminder of how unpredictable environmental hazards can be, especially during periods of strong winds or unstable weather conditions, which are not uncommon along the Garden Route.
