Shoppers are being urged to stay alert after a surge in online scams falsely linked to one of South Africa’s most recognisable retail brands, Cape {town}Etc reports.
It comes after Woolworths issued a warning to customers following reports of fraudulent promotions circulating online, claiming to offer boxes of Woolworths products at unusually low prices.
Information shared by the retailer via a Facebook post highlights that these scams are designed to appear legitimate, often using altered branding and misleading visuals to lure unsuspecting shoppers.
In a message shared with customers, the company said it had ‘come across a few concerning scams claiming to sell boxes of Woolies products for exceptionally low prices’.
The posts typically include a link that begins with a survey and ends with a request for card details, a red flag Woolworths says shoppers should never ignore.
The retailer explained that the scam links redirect users to different websites with each click, making it difficult to trace the source.
Adding to the deception, the posts feature doctored images using Woolworths branding, along with fake comments from supposed ‘happy customers’ who claim to have benefited from the deal.
Retail security teams say this tactic is commonly used to build trust and create urgency, pushing users to act before questioning the offer.
Woolworths has reminded customers that it operates only one official website. ‘Remember Woolworths only has one website: woolworths.co.za!’ the company reiterated.
Customers are encouraged to verify promotions directly with Woolworths if anything seems unclear.
‘As always, we urge you to be mindful when shopping online and reach out to us directly if you have any concerns, or want to check the validity of a promotion. We are here to help,’ the retailer stated.
