The 17-year-old gained national attention after a video of him passionately cheering for the Springboks went viral, prompting Kolisi to make a surprise visit to the school. The match, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Kings Park Stadium, will mark Kolisi’s second game since rejoining the Sharks last month.
Mouton, a Grade 11 pupil from Macassar, led his school’s emotional war cry, ‘Hoya,’ during a video shared ahead of the Springboks’ recent clash with the All Blacks, where the Boks triumphed 18-12. Kolisi later referenced the cheer in a post-match interview, thanking fans for their unwavering support. Shortly after the Springboks’ victory, Kolisi delighted students at Wynberg Boys’ High with a surprise visit. The excitement was palpable as he greeted the students on the field.
Earlier this month, Mouton received a message from Cape Town YouTuber Jordan Buhrs, known for his popular rugby channel. The Sharks had contacted Buhrs to arrange a special experience for Mouton, who was eager to see a live game. Buhrs, who has a strong partnership with the Sharks, was thrilled to help facilitate this unforgettable rugby experience. The Sharks and their sponsors generously organised flights for Buhrs and Mouton to travel to Durban on Thursday.
Mouton had the chance to connect with his heroes, including the legendary Kolisi, as they prepared for Saturday’s match. ‘Leighton is driven, focused, and such a genuinely nice young guy,’ Buhrs said. ‘I was excited to offer him an insider’s view of life as a Sharks player, showcasing behind-the-scenes moments that fans rarely see.’
Michael Leslie, the Sharks’ chief brand officer, noted that after meeting Kolisi in Cape Town, Mouton expressed his desire to watch him play live. ‘This was a fantastic opportunity to make a wish come true and bring joy to someone,’ Leslie said. ‘We’re glad to facilitate this and hope it inspires Leighton while creating lasting memories.’ Mouton described meeting the Sharks players as a magical experience, unable to hide his excitement.
‘I feel very lucky. I know many boys would love to be in my position. This is a memory I will cherish forever,’ he shared, noting that this was his first time flying.
The enthusiastic teen expressed his love for rugby, saying, ‘It’s a game where you can fight hard for your team and the jersey, but afterwards, you shake hands with your opponents, knowing you gave it your all.’
As for the upcoming match, Mouton’s prediction was clear, ‘It’s a win for the Sharks!’
