Wynberg metro police officers arrested two suspects, while being on crime prevention patrols, that were attempting to exchange the vehicles number plates on Mitcham Road on 23 September, Cape {town} Etc reports.

As officers were in pursuit of the suspects, the car’s occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled in different directions.
‘Two suspects were arrested, after the one tried throwing a bag he was carrying over a high wall. Inside the bag were several car-breaking implements, including a key coding device, an immobiliser bypass device, and 2 pairs of black gloves,’ said JP Smith, Mayco member for Safety and Security in a Facebook post.
‘The suspects vehicle was impounded and they were arrested at Wynberg SAPS, for being in possession of car breaking implements. SAPS Investigating officers will now attempt to link these suspects to other cases of motor vehicle theft in the City of Cape Town,’ Smith added.
Smith stated that the latest crime statistics indicated that over 8 600 vehicles were reported stolen in the previous cycle, with ‘around 1 200 of these incidents occurring in the Western Cape’, as reported by People’s Post via News24.
Currently, Wynberg police ranks as 20th in South Africa for ‘theft out of motor vehicle’ cases, according to the latest SAPS crime statistics.
‘Our crime prevention strategy has begun yielding results but hopefully now, with the added advantage of receiving up-to-date crime information from SAPS, we can assist by instantly deploying additional resources to specifically target any crime patterns that begin to develop,’ said Smith.
