A day out on Table Mountain ended in tragedy after a young man died in an apparent drowning at De Villiers Dam near Constantia Nek.
Emergency services were alerted after reports that a man had gone missing in the water. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said it was notified by Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services Control of a drowning in progress, according to Newsroom ZA.
NSRI rescue swimmers responded alongside members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Table Mountain National Park rangers.
According to the NSRI, the missing person was a 20-year-old man from Plumstead, as friends who were at the dam directed rescuers to the area where he was last seen. He had reportedly been swimming in shallow water before disappearing.
Rescue swimmers initiated a search, with police divers later taking over the underwater operation. The man’s body was subsequently located and recovered by SAPS divers.
Paramedics declared him dead at the scene. The NSRI said the body was handed over to police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. An inquest docket has been opened.
In a separate incident, the NSRI confirmed that a search is under way for a man reported missing after a drowning at Cosy Bay in Oudekraal, between Bakoven and Llandudno.
Search efforts have included free-dive operations, a surface search using a rescue craft, shoreline checks and an aerial search conducted by the EMS Metro Rescue Drone Unit.
At the time of the update, there had been no sighting of the missing man. Police divers and Police Sea Borderline Control were expected to continue the search, with SAPS investigating the incident.
The NSRI extended its condolences to the family and friends of the man who died at De Villiers Dam and thanked all emergency services involved for their coordinated response.
