According to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) about 600,000 Social Relief Disaster grant applicants hold tertiary qualifications.

Those 60% of applicants for the R350-a-month Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant are young people and five percent of all SRD grant applicants hold tertiary qualifications but are unemployed and searching for jobs.

The government introduced, the Special Covid-19 R350 SRD grant in April 2020 as a government intervention to combat the loss of household income that occurred as a result of unemployment caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the country’s economy.

According to SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi, 930,000 SRD applications were received in July from people under 20-years-old and more than 2,226,000 from people aged 20 to 24-years while 3.9 million from people aged 25 to 35- years-old.

Latsatsi also added that on the 26 July, the agency had received more than 600,000 applications from individuals with tertiary-level education (of all ages) as per News24

However, the Department of Social Development is evaluating how they can use this data and work with other departments to find solutions to youth unemployment.
