Zandile Mafe has officially been charged for his involvement in a devastating fire at the National Assembly chamber in January this year.
As reported by eNCA, the 49-year-old faces charges of housebreaking, arson and terrorism after appearing in Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Prosecutor Mervyn Menigo told Magistrate Ronel Oliver that a damage report had been received from the Department of Public Works and that the National Director of Public Prosecutions had issued the certificate to pursue terrorism charges against Mafe, as News24 further reports.
He has previously applied for bail numerous times, but all attempts have been unsuccessful.
The State was ready for the case to be transferred to the High Court for trial, the court heard on Thursday. A pre-trial date has been set for 12 August at the Western Cape High Court.
