In an escalating political confrontation, former President Jacob Zuma has sent a legal letter to current President Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding his resignation by Friday, 8 August or face potential legal action.
The former president claims Ramaphosa violated constitutional obligations in handling Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s suspension over corruption allegations.
‘The President may have breached his oath of office,’ said legal analyst Benedict Phiri, commenting on Zuma’s demands. ‘This targets how he handled a cabinet member’s potential conflict of interest.’

The letter, delivered Monday, comes just days after the Constitutional Court rejected Zuma’s attempt to challenge Ramaphosa’s executive authority, as reported by EWN.
The dispute stems from KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations of political interference by Mchunu. While Ramaphosa opted to suspend rather than fire the minister, Zuma argues this was unconstitutional.
Last week, the MK Party lost its Constitutional Court appeal for direct intervention, prompting Zuma’s personal legal challenge.
As the Friday deadline approaches, all eyes turn to Ramaphosa and, potentially, the courts.
