A video of Sunday morning’s accident, which took place on Victoria Road, Bantry Bay, has gone viral and has left residents of the Atlantic Seaboard outraged and calling for stricter penalties for offenders.
Sea Point police arrested an adult male for driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving after he lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a group of runners.
A male and a female were hit. The impact caused the woman to be thrown over the barrier wall and down the embankment.
The Atlantic Seaboard has seen a surge in supercar owners speeding and driving recklessly, treating public roads like their personal racetracks with little regard for anything other than their own self-interest.
Despite repeated complaints from residents and the clear dangers posed to pedestrians and other motorists, offenders often face little more than a slap on the wrist.
The lack of serious consequences has only emboldened reckless behaviour, raising concerns about safety and law enforcement’s ability to curb these incidents.
One such case remains unresolved weeks after Nigerian rapper 3GAR Baby crashed a Mclaren, worth approximately R3 million, on High Level Road, Sea Point, while speeding.
Despite clear evidence of reckless driving, no arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed. Instead, the driver has taken to social media, posting videos from a wheelchair, hosting giveaways, and engaging in light-hearted antics – all while avoiding accountability.
CCTV footage from the night of the crash shows the vehicle speeding down High Level Road before losing control and slamming into a wall. In response, the driver claimed he swerved to avoid a homeless person and dismissed the footage as ‘edited’.
