Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows the golden rule – don’t give your fur child chocolate.
As a little girl, I once thought that this was a made-up rule and that it had something to do with adults wanting all the chocolate for themselves.
Of course, there was a much bigger reason our fur babies couldn’t have some chocolate loving. Chocolate is toxic for dogs because of the theobromine content, which their bodies can’t process the way that human bodies can. (We can metabolise this content in a way that they can’t).
However, a project dubbed ‘Goodbye Kisses’ is giving dogs who have reached the end of their earth-journey a chance to enjoy chocolate for the first and last time as a soft, sweet and loving goodbye.
Vets are keeping jars of ‘goodbye’ kisses to allow dogs who are going to be euthanised a taste of heaven on earth in chocolate form, whereby the chocolate’s toxicity won’t matter for the dog anymore, and they become free to experience a delight previously reserved for people.
“This jar of Hershey Kisses is saved for Euthanasia appointments because no dog should go to heaven without tasting chocolate,” said Sarah Dawn of the project.
The internet is loving the concept, with many praising the idea as compassionate.
One vet, Dr. Namie from Smiths Station Hospital posted her jar, and it went viral because of its sweet and loving nature.
It seems to be a movement amongst vets that even extended to cake treats, ice cream and chocolate sauce.
“When we were saying goodbye to Andouille, one of the techs brought in some ice cream cake with chocolate sauce all over it. It must have been someone’s birthday. She said the same thing about letting him have something he normally couldn’t. He loved it and that made us happy and willing to say farewell. The compassion and love they gave (in the middle of a pandemic no less) meant the world to us,” said Jonothan Atwater.
Every dog deserves days filled with delight and love, and if we can wrap that all up into a final treat then this is a project that should be appreciated around the world.
