It seems the mysterious arsonist struck again last night. I don’t want to jump to conclusions and I really don’t enjoy nor entertain the idea of an arsonist living in our midst, but less than 12 hours ago the mountain above Vredehoek was ablaze, making it the umpteenth seemingly unnatural fire we’ve had this summer.
Yes, fire is very much a part of our fynbos kingdom and is actually needed in this environment, but seven fires ago I concluded that this couldn’t have been natural in such a short space of time. Hats off once again to city firefighters and Volunteer Wildlife Services for stepping in and working throughout the night to battle the burn.
By 11 pm the fire had been contained, but only after coming dangerously close to several Vredehoek homes. If it’s an arsonist I hope karma gets them eventually. If it’s just a really fire-friendly season we’re having, we can only be thankful for having such responsive and efficient firefighters and volunteers.
Fist bumps and applause to the men and women at @vwsfires for getting the #vredehoek blaze under control so quickly. pic.twitter.com/ptywNWdjRU
