The small South African town of Bloemhof has been named the country’s Town of the Year for 2025, a testament to the resilience and community spirit of its residents.
Nestled on the tranquil banks of the Vaal River, Bloemhof’s triumph in the 2025 Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar competition — an annual event hosted by Afrikaans channel kykNET to celebrate towns with strong community spirit and cultural heritage across South Africa and Namibia — marks a proud milestone for the town. The recognition could not only herald a new era of community pride but may also influence the local property market in the years to come.
With a rich history dating back to 1864, when it was founded during a diamond rush on the farm Klipfontein, Bloemhof derived its name, meaning ‘flower garden’, from the gardens lovingly planted by the farm owner’s daughter. Today, the town predominantly relies on maize and cattle farming, while offering a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and water sports.
Its victory over eight competing towns — including Rehoboth in Namibia, which took second place, and Wilderness in the Western Cape — is a significant achievement for this modest community.

Bloemhof accounts for a mere 3% of the total property value among the eight competing South African towns, positioning it in sixth place, while property hotspots like Port Alfred and Wilderness dominate the rankings with 31% and 29% respectively.
Only about 7% of households in Bloemhof earn more than R26 000 per month, contrasting sharply with Pennington and Wilderness, where approximately 100% and 85% of households exceed that threshold.
