Gin – Six Dogs Distillery
Born on the botanically diverse fringes of the Karoo, and distilled in a shed which used to house the farm’s six dogs, Six Dogs Distillery espouses everything people love most about craft gin: delicate and interesting flavours, gorgeous packaging and a story in every glass.
Choose between the flagship Karoo gin (a bewitching mix of 11 unusual botanicals), the striking Blue gin (which gets its hue from the blue pea flower and turns pink when mixed with tonic) and the recently-released Pinotage Stained gin which is “an alchemy between neighbours, friends, nature, and of course, six faithful dogs.”
Wine – Perdeberg Winery
Situated on the outskirts of Paarl and named after the mountain zebras which once roamed the slopes, Perdeberg Winery sets itself apart through its use of unirrigated vineyards which result in complex flavours that highlight the farm’s many different terroirs.
Perdeberg is known as the ‘home of Chenin Blanc’, due to the many different expressions this grape achieves on the property (the Vineyard Collection and Endura Single Vineyard our two favourites). Beyond chenin, the Rossouw’s Legacy White Blend (a buttery blend of chenin blanc, grenache blanc and viognier) and the Conqueror Cabernet Sauvignon (big, bold, modern) are both worth crowing about.
Craft Beer – Devil’s Peak Brewing Company
Brewed in the shadow of Cape Town’s most moody and interesting mountain, Devil’s Peak Brewing Company has been at the vanguard of South Africa’s craft brewing scene since Day 1. Every time you crack open a bottle of Devil’s Peak, you’re guaranteed complex flavours, refreshing purity and authentic ingredients.
Whether you go for the crisp and classic Lager, the brazen and bold King’s Blockhouse IPA or the subtle and eminently quaffable First Light Golden Ale, you will not be disappointed. The addition of the (utterly delicious) Zero to Hero non-alcoholic lager means there’s now something for absolutely every kind of beer drinker.
Craft Rum – Cape of Storms Distillery
Rum has been forever connected to the seas, and where better to produce 100% natural, double-distilled rum than the historical Cape of Storms? Craft rum promises to be the next big drinks craze – and you can expect this seriously professional and talented outfit to lead the way.
The Great White Rum will soon be your mixer of choice while the surprisingly subtle Fyn Botanical Rum and the honey-rich Oak Infused Rum will appeal to gin and whisky drinkers respectively. At their base, all three rums feature strong African blackstrap molasses to add a bit of local flair and flavour. What’s not to like?
