Home to a diverse range of wines as well as a destination for epicures and art enthusiasts alike, Glen Carlou is situated less than 35 minutes from Cape Town in the Simonsberg-Paarl region. With panoramic views of the valley Glen Carlou meets the criteria for the ultimate winelands destination.
The Glen Carlou experience is about sharing and delighting in wine, food and art. An opportunity to discover the estate’s award-winning wine range, either with an informative wine pairing or a delicious meal in their restaurant.
First and foremost, Glen Carlou is about wine. Their winery was designed to be practical, from receiving grapes to the bottling and storage facilities. An underground cellar was built into the mountainside to benefit from the ideal conditions for wine maturation, an integral part of the winemaking process. Currently, this cellar holds 2 500 assorted French and American oak barrels.
The rich tapestries of passionate people interwoven with insightful custodians have shaped and continue to develop Glen Carlou. A wonderful storyline supports their desirable reputation as a leading internationally and respected wine brand. Under the watchful eye of Cellar Master Johnnie Calitz, Glen Carlou’s wine conversation is led by the Quartz Stone Chardonnay and Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon – two naturally fermented single-vineyard wines. Both named for the distinctive soils in which the vines are planted. Their complete range is reflective of a South African collection and includes a Sauvignon Blanc, natural sweet Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Grand Classique, amongst others.
Complement your Glen Carlou wine encounter with a culinary experience in their restaurant. Chef Johan Stander presents beautiful plates of food, brought to life from his family’s legacy of recipes. He draws inspiration from traditional South African cuisine, with a modern-day twist,- each dish enhancing the flavours of Glen Carlou’s wines perfectly. Whether you choose to dine on the terrace or in the air-conditioned restaurant, your visit is made extra special with the breathtaking views of the region.
Before making your way home make time to meander through the Gallery @ Glen Carlou, which houses a collection of contemporary, pop and modern art by South African artists. Mediums are as diverse as installation, photography, contemporary embroidery and ceramics contrast with more traditional painting and sculpture.
Be sure to add Glen Carlou to your summer destination visit list this season.
