Offering a colourful, one-of-a-kind stay, The Trade is Cape Town’s newest boutique hotel. Set in one very grand historic building, brimming with character, guests are transported into a different time and genre of life.
Nestled on Shortmarket Street, bang in the middle of one of Cape Town’s most creative communities, guests will find galleries, buzzing restaurants and bars, coffee shops and destination boutiques at every turn. And then, of course, there is everything Cape Town has to offer, such as world-class beaches, Table Mountain and vibrant city culture – right on your doorstep.
From a cultural and gastronomical standpoint, neighbourhood highlights include:
- Whatiftheworld Gallery: For a vibrant mix of local contemporary art. Walk up the ramp into a restored former garage filled with local A-list talent.
- Hacienda: For Mexican but not as you know it. Fresh tortillas made daily, cultured mole and one of the best selections of tequila outside of Mexico.
- Rosetta: For some of the best coffee culture in town. Speciality coffee and incredible cakes and pastries. Warning, these get snapped up quickly.
- Nikkei: For a culinary adventure like no other. A vibrant fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavours.

And for an added touch of je ne sais pas, all the rooms have all been designed around three themes: Fred, Ginger and Ruby.
The Fred Astaire theme is a dance between masculinity and softness. The cobalt kitchen packs a punch and is partnered with corals and whispers of fuschia, with all the parquet floors bold colours, warm wood and statement furniture giving the room a retro elegance vibe.
The Ginger Rogers theme is the feminine counterpart to Fred. The blush pink kitchen is offset from the spice toned lounge. Electric pops of yellow and pink make this a sassy statement room.
The Ruby theme offers a calming green backdrop with scatterings of scarlet tones, bringing a regal quality to the room.
All rooms come with vinyl flooring and cosy striped headboards, while light, bright bathrooms are always stocked with goods to get you squeaky clean and smelling great. The Trade has got you covered for your best night’s sleep with comfy mattresses, blockout curtains and double-glazed windows to help you doze off.
At The Trade, urban chic meets old school charm, calm complements eccentric pops of colour and art intersects commerce. Steeped in nostalgic attention to detail, here a touch of old Hollywood glamour accompanies eccentric quirk.
