It’s important to note that chip repair is only performed on the windscreen and not on other car windows. As long as the damage is confined to the outer layer of the glass, it can usually be repaired.
What is the most important distinguishing factor between a chip and a small crack?
‘Chips’ can be placed into three different categories:
- Bulls-eye: No visible legs (small cracks). Mostly round or half moon in shape not larger than 10 mm Ø in A zone
- Star: Legs (small crack lines) are clearly visible but are not longer than 25mm in the C zone
- Combination (star & bulls-eye)
It’s important to address windscreen damage as soon as possible to avoid the chip or crack spreading and requiring a full windscreen replacement, which can be more expensive.
When it comes to repairing chipped windscreens, it’s generally possible to repair chips on any vehicle with a laminate front windscreen consisting of two glass layers, as long as the damage is limited to the outer layer of the glass.
However, if there’s a safety film installed on the windscreen, the situation becomes a bit more complicated. If the film is on the inside of the windscreen, chip repair is still possible. But if it’s on the outside, the repair is not recommended.
Another question that often arises is whether several chips can be repaired on the same windscreen or surface. The answer is yes, as long as the chips are located within the specifications of each zone.
It’s important to address multiple chips as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
When it comes to repairing a chip on a windscreen, it’s important to seek the help of professionals to avoid any risks associated with DIY repairs. One of the main risks of having a chip repaired next to the street or by an unprofessional is that there may not be a warranty on the work.
Another concern for vehicle owners is the possibility of a chip turning into a ‘runner’ and causing further damage. Unfortunately, there are no specific signs to look for as it depends on road conditions, temperature, or a combination thereof. This is why it’s important to have any chips repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
When it comes to repairing a chip, there are specific zones on the windscreen where it may be more dangerous to address or where repair may not be possible.
The process of repairing a chip involves creating a vacuum above the damaged site in the outer layer of the laminated glass, extracting air, dirt, and moisture from the hairline fractures.
A specialised filling/bonding resin is then pressed in and drawn into the chip and hairline fractures. Finally, the resin is cured with a specialised UV light, a process that takes approximately 15 minutes.
It’s important to note that the cost of repairing a chip can vary and is best discussed with a local dealer. In the event that a chip cannot be repaired, PG Glass offers windscreen replacements, which can be arranged via an insurance claim or a cash sale.
PG Glass Medic® Chip Repair and Quality Promise
While the PG Glass Medic® Chip Repair process takes every precaution to ensure that a chip being repaired does not ‘run’ during the repair process, it may occur in rare cases, accounting for only about 5% of incidents. In such cases, PG Glass cannot be held responsible.
This also applies to chip repairs being done on Shatterprufe®, Safevue®, and OE-manufactured windscreens.
The PG Glass Quality Promise guarantees that customers are satisfied with their service. If the workmanship of the PG Glass Medic® Repair System is unsatisfactory, the cost of the repair will be deducted from a new Shatterprufe® or Safevue® replacement windscreen.
If the original repair was paid by the customer’s insurance company, they will be credited for the repair invoice cost if they approve a windscreen replacement.
The customer will be liable for the excess payment on the windscreen replacement, depending on their insurance policy. If the customer pays cash for the windscreen replacement, the cost of the chip repair will be deducted from the price of the new windscreen (Shatterprufe® or Safevue®).
It is important to note that windscreen replacements come with a lifetime guarantee on workmanship and a lifetime warranty on the product, which is not transferable to the next owner. Tampering with the windscreen in any way will nullify the guarantee.
