A crucial part of the Stellenzicht revival story includes the restoration of many fynbos species to the farm from the Helderberg Mountains. Fynbos, a unique vegetation type found in the Cape Winelands of South Africa, plays a crucial role in shaping the wines produced in this region.
As stewards of this beautiful land, Stellenzicht prioritises regenerative and sustainable farming practices in its everyday activities to protect its natural resources and fynbos gardens. These efforts foster a thriving ecosystem, safeguarding its dragonfly population and supporting other diverse, native flora and fauna.
This philosophy of sustainability and regeneration guides Stellenzicht’s daily activities on the farm and in the cellar.
Here are some of the fynbos you can find in its panoramic landscape when you visit the Stellenzicht Wine Pod for a wine-tasting and wood-fired pizza:
- King proteas
- Pincushion proteas
- Silver Bush
- Buchu
- Rhino Bush
- Mountain Sage
- Wild Rosemary
- Rooibos
Another way Stellenzicht protects the fynbos population around the farm is by building an eco Wine Pod as its wine-tasting centre.
The Wine Pod itself is an eco-structure with 80% of its materials being recyclable and self-insulating. It is also perched on crow’s feet, meaning that no foundation was built. This ensures that large amounts of wildlife are not displaced and kill the surrounding plant life.
From the rich biodiversity that adds complexity to the flavours, to the unique terroir that gives Stellenzicht wine a sense of place, sustainable practices as well as its thriving fynbos gardens play a vital role in shaping the distinctive characteristics of the wines from the farm.
