NERSA has announced a 30-day consultation period for Eskom’s proposed retail tariff plan, set to shine a spotlight on electricity pricing for 2025/2026.
But here’s the catch: The process runs from 7 November to 17 December – smack in the middle of the festive season.
Dezemba, a time when Saffers are offline, recharging and soaking up the sun.
For consumers and businesses, this timing dims the chances of meaningful participation. Adding to the clouds, there’s only one public hearing on 18 December via MS Teams. For many, this brings back gloomy lockdown vibes and raises real concerns about accessibility. Not everyone has reliable internet – or electricity, for that matter – to join.
Then there’s the tight turnaround. NERSA plans to review all feedback between 19 and 27 December – with two public holidays in the mix. A mere five working days to analyse input on such a complex issue? That doesn’t sound bright to us.
At GoSolr, we’re calling on NERSA to see the light: Extend the deadline to mid-January 2025 and host in-person public meetings nationwide.
Let’s illuminate the real impacts of these proposed tariff changes and ensure all South Africans have a chance to weigh in.
Together, we can create a process as clear and fair as a sunny summer’s day. ?
