For one unforgettable night only, Nederburg will open its vault of rare and historic wines for a glamorous outdoor summer gala unlike any other.
On Saturday, 6 December, guests are invited to join a long-table garden celebration, ‘Unlocking the Vault’, where wines from seven decades – dating as far back as the 1960s – will be poured and enjoyed under the stars.
The evening promises live music, a DJ and a dance floor, with guests dressed in elegant white to set the tone for a dazzling summer soirée. The highlight: seven wines from seven decades, beginning with a 61-year-old Port from 1964.
Many of the featured wines were crafted by the legendary Günter Brözel, Nederburg’s cellarmaster from 1956 to 1989. During his tenure, Brözel earned global acclaim – including the Robert Mondavi International Winemaker of the Year title, a first for South Africa.

His enduring legacy was honoured again last year when he was named Tim Atkin MW’s Winemaking Legend, a nod to the longevity and brilliance of his creations. Collectors eagerly pursue his wines at auction – and now guests will have the rare chance to taste one: the 1974 Nederburg Auction Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
The tasting journey continues through the eras of Razvan Macici, another celebrated Nederburg winemaker, and current cellarmaster Samuel Viljoen, who has kept the brand among the world’s most admired. Under his leadership, Nederburg has repeatedly featured on Drinks International’s list of the World’s Most Admired Wine Brands.
His red winemaker, Zinasckhe Steyn, was recently named among The Drinks Business’ Global Masters Top 100 Winemakers.
Guests will be guided through the line-up by renowned sommelier Higgo Jacobs and Vinoteque custodian Michael van Deventer, who oversees Nederburg’s priceless Tabernacle collection. The wines include:
- Nederburg Port 1964
- Nederburg Auction Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1974
- Nederburg Eminence 1989
- Nederburg Edelkeur 1991
- Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
- Nederburg Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
- Nederburg Private Bin Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

‘The idea is to host a glitzy, feel-good celebration that’s festive and fun – but also honours Nederburg’s continuum of excellence,’ says Kate Jackson, Nederburg GM.
‘Winemaking styles and trends have evolved, but our commitment to quality remains unchanged. This is our chance to celebrate the craft, the people and the passion behind every vintage.’
The evening begins at 5pm with live saxophone music, canapés and Cap Classique, and will end with a harvest table and street food-inspired small plates and bowls, paired with some of Nederburg’s current award-winning wines. As the night unfolds, guests will dance under the stars – the perfect finale to a once-in-a-lifetime wine experience.
Tickets are R1 450 per person and extremely limited, so book now to reserve your seat.
