Archery has always been an interesting and cool sport, but movies such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games have brought the sport into the lime light for many more people around the world. Anyone can enjoy archery, regardless of fitness level, and can practice both indoors and outdoors. The Western Cape is filled with archery clubs where you can visit and try out this exciting sport for yourself.
It’s very easy to start archery. Most of the clubs in the Cape offer beginner classes designed to introduce people to the sport. Clubs and classes generally provide all equipment for beginners to use until they’re ready to commit to buying their own. And no need to fret; the equipment is high quality and can be matched to each person’s build and skills.
After a couple of months practicing and gaining skills, archers can enter competitive tournaments and events. The SA National Archery Association (SANAA) and the Regional Governing Body, the Western Cape Archery Federation (WCAF), conduct regular tournaments and events. Many of these tournaments are registered with World Archery (the International Target Archery Federation) and IFAA (the International Field Archery Association) which allows archers to claim Performance Awards as well as World Records in the various disciplines.
If this sounds like a fun activity you’re keen to pursue, find the closest club to you and reach out. Soon you’ll be just as good as Legolas and Katniss!
