The Junior River Warden Programme was officially launched at Rondevlei Boma, bringing together Grade 5 and 6 learners from Red River Primary, Floreat Primary and Ysterplaat Primary.
Supported by the City of Cape Town, this initiative introduces learners from non-fee-paying schools to the basics of river health and conservation.
The launch event highlighted the vital role of teachers in inspiring and supporting learners to engage with environmental programmes.
As Deputy Mayor Alderman Eddie Andrews noted, ‘Teachers are the ones that drive these programmes and without your support and desire to inspire your kids and get them involved, they never take off.’
The programme goes beyond environmental facts. It teaches learners how to lead, listen and work together. Through guided activities, learners explore local waterways, understand pollution and biodiversity, and take part in real-world solutions such as clean-ups and monitoring.
One learner shared, ‘What I learned and what’s important is that we must not litter, because if we do not litter, we can make the world a better place.’

The Junior River Warden Programme is a feeder into Nature Connect’s broader environmental education pathway, preparing learners to join more advanced programmes from Grade 7 onwards. The goal is to build early awareness, responsibility and pride in natural spaces, starting right where learners live and learn.
Deputy Mayor Andrews added, ‘If everyone takes ownership, then as Team Cape Town we need to ensure that public open spaces are protected, it is clean, but most importantly our relationship with waste is re-examined, reviewed, and transformed.’
