On Saturday, 22 April, the City opened the Sustainable Trendsetters Build-a-thon at Blue Route Mall, where students from 12 different schools competed for R20 000 in prize money in honour of World Earth Day.
Redefine Properties, the owners of Blue Route Mall, and Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages sponsored the build-a-thon, which aims to motivate people to reevaluate their attitudes towards waste. The competition aspect determines which of the competing schools can create the best sculpture out of recyclable waste.

Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s mayoral committee member for urban waste management, officially opened this year’s competition, which Blue Route Mall hosted in conjunction with the competition’s primary sponsor, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB).
Participating schools were instructed, as in previous years, to collect their own recyclable items, which they could then use to create their structural design.
While all painting and spray painting of objects had to be done off-site, the various teams (made up of six students and one teacher) were required to build on-site for at least four hours and up to seven hours to complete their sculpture. The platform and basic items needed to create the upcycled design, which needed to be between 1 and 1,5 metres wide and 1 to 1,8 metres high, were provided by Blue Route Mall.
According to People’s Post, Redefine’s Regional Marketing and Alternative Income Manager Bronwyn Rabie, said that they were blown away by the participants’ creative designs and how the event has taken off, and that they hope to grow the event in the coming years.
The physical sculptures will be on display at the shopping centre until Friday, 3 May, and external judges chosen by the mall will judge the structures and announce the winning school by the end of April.
