Cape Town broadband speeds have placed the city at the top of South Africa’s latest fixed-line rankings, with Cape Town City Centre leading the Q1 2026, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to MyBroadband, ‘Cape Town achieved the highest average broadband speeds in South Africa’ after analysing 121,000 performance tests conducted between 1 January and 31 March 2026.
The report recorded an average download speed of 36 Mbps, an upload speed of 28 Mbps and a latency of 37 ms. It noted that Android-based testing was used due to more reliable location tracking.

Cape Town City Centre posted an average download speed of 99.34 Mbps, followed by strong performances in Durbanville, Claremont and Milnerton Rural. The report explained that fibre products are often sold at lower speed tiers, which means actual performance may not reflect a line’s full capacity. ‘These services are sold based on speed,’ the report noted.

While Cape Town leads overall, the picture shifts across the Cape Flats. Delft South recorded an average download speed of 20.95 Mbps, placing it among the slowest-performing areas in the country. Earlier findings also pointed to Philippi as one of the weakest areas for connectivity.
Kuils River recorded an average download speed of 48.16 Mbps, placing it in the mid-range nationally and showing more stable performance than several other Cape Town areas.
Strand posted an average download speed of 36.47 Mbps, closely aligned with the national average and reflecting moderate broadband performance across the area.
While specific Q1 2026 figures were not listed for Mitchells Plain, available fibre packages in the area typically range between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps, pointing to a mix of entry-level and higher-speed connectivity depending on infrastructure and affordability.
For many residents, slower speeds can affect remote work, studying and access to essential online services. The latest data shows how broadband performance can vary widely between neighbourhoods across the city.
