EskomSePush, a local mobile app founded in 2015 by Dan Wells and Herman Maritz, both from Cape Town with the slogan ‘More than just a funny name’, has taken the nation by storm amid ‘Eishkom’s’ electricity cuts.

The app provides South Africans across the nation with reliable, up-to-date schedules on load shedding in their residential or business areas.

More than 50 000 areas are supported by the app, including Cape Town, Plokwane, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Emfuleni, and Lesedi to name a few.

With several electrical grids currently off, the frequency of load shedding has increased countrywide, and it has not been easy for locals to keep up with the often unpredictable power cuts.

Designed to be user-friendly, the app is uncomplicated and easy to navigate– users simply download it and enter their area to receive updates and power cut forecasts.

The app includes push notifications to alert users when load shedding has started in their area.

How to download and use the app, according to EskomSePush

With an overall rating on Apple’s iOS App Store of 4.2 out of 5, it is no surprise that the number of EskomSePush users has been increasing daily.

Maritz shared on social media that the app gained 400 000 users in a single day.

In 2015, EksomSePush took home two awards at the MTNAppAwards, winning the Best Breakthrough Developer App award and the People’s Choice Award.

EskomSePush’s founders explained in a social media post that they are focused on helping South African residents.

“We’re still not making any money with the app. For us it’s all about the users.”

EskomSePush is available for free on both Google Play Store for Android and Apple’s iOS App Store.
