This one-of-a-kind art event, running until 2 February 2025, features:
- ’30 Years of Arting Around: A Redospective’, Hamilton’s solo exhibition celebrating his incredible 30-year art journey.
- ‘Dream Dream World: The Morpheus Mash-Up’, a vibrant group exhibition curated by Hamilton, bringing together a selection of talented artists.
- The debut of his illustrated autobiography, Arting and the Subsequent Shenanigans of a Serial Collector.
Hamilton’s solo show, ‘Redospective’, is a playful twist on the traditional retrospective. Featuring new works alongside reimagined classics, this exhibition re-contextualises three decades of artistic exploration (30 years of ARTING around).
One of the standout pieces is ‘I Promised You a Rose Garden’, a stunning hand-embroidered quilt incorporating fabrics from Hamilton’s own childhood and a tribute to his mother.

The ‘Dream Dream World: The Morpheus Mash-Up’ exhibition will include works by a diverse group of artists such as Katharine Meeding, Conrad Botes, Jaco Sieberhagen, Stephen Rosin, Collen Maswanganyi, Ella Cronje, Carol Gibbs and Michele Nigrini.
Inspired by Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams, this exhibition invites you to step into a dreamscape of vibrant creativity.
Hamilton’s trademark ‘Mash-Up’ curatorial style, where diverse works come together to tell a unified story, ensures this group show will be a mesmerising blend of visions.
As Hamilton puts it: ‘My trademark ‘Mash-Up’ curating style blends diverse artistic visions to create a unified, collective dream. By showcasing my solo exhibition at The Gallery at Gel Carlou, I’m fulfilling one of my dreams and celebrating the joy of creativity with fellow artists.’
His new book, Arting and the Subequent Shenanigans of a Serial Collector, offers a fascinating peek into Hamilton’s extraordinary life, from growing up in the Karoo to his global travels and career in the art world.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Glen Carlou Wine Estate, renowned for supporting the arts, this event promises to be a visual feast for art lovers. The gallery, with its roots in the legendary Donald Hess Art Museum, continues its tradition of showcasing cutting-edge South African art.
And the relationship between Hamilton and Glen Carlou runs deep, as Managing Director Johan Erasmus explains:
‘From the start, Alex Hamilton has been instrumental in our journey, curating and contributing to some of our most unforgettable exhibitions. This ongoing partnership continues with what we believe will be a historic solo exhibition celebrating Hamilton’s 30-year art journey at Glen Carlou.’
Don’t miss the chance to be part of this extraordinary art experience!
