Not everyone fancies a ‘traditional’ Christmas Day gathering. Maybe you do, but you’re away from your loved ones. Or maybe this year, you’ve decided to spend it differently – by yourself or with a few pals over some well-deserved sundowners.
If you’re in the Mother City and want to celebrate the good ole festive in a chilled way, then what better way than catching the sunset?
If you’ve got festive fog on the brain and have forgotten some of our best sunset spots, here’s a lovely reminder (and some of my personal favourites, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt).
1. Signal Hill
Of course. The hill of all signals. Signal Hill is one of my favourite spots to cheer the sun farewell. If you haven’t been before, this Christmas could be a fabulous time to try it out. Cuddled next to Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, Signal Hill will have you feeling like Jack from Titanic when he declares he’s on top of the world.
Its epicness is evident in just how many people pack their picnic baskets, drinks and speakers to share in the glory of another day well spent.
2. The Rock
A lesser-known viewing spot, The Rock is the kind of place to take someone you love to have deep conversations with – or a place to do some thinking if that’s what you need today. The views are absolutely unreal, and you’ll definitely feel like any pictures you take are postcard-worthy.
3. Saunders Rocky Beach
Saunders is one of the best places to grab your friends, do some mild rock climbing and feast your eyes on a view that many can only dream of.
Pro-tip: The wind tends to pick up at Saunders, so always bring a jacket.

4. Llandudno Beach
Llandudno Beach is easily one of the most popular local sunset spots, and this title exists for a reason. Her brilliant beauty, the ocean’s delight and a sunset that will leave you with the thought that ‘everything is going to be okay’ are just some of the reasons why this is a spot you’ll gladly give your breath to.
5. Maiden’s Cove
Between Clifton’s beaches and Glen Beach lies the Maiden’s secret, or rather her Cove. Sporting braai areas, this is a fabulous pick for the hungry sunset watcher who cannot simply feast their eyes on the sunset alone.
6. Chapman’s Peak Drive
Now, if you feel you’d rather take a drive and cruise into the evening, Chapman’s Peak Drive has to be your go-to. If you choose to get out and go exploring, you absolutely can (of course, try not to do this without a partner in exploration for safety!).
Here’s hoping traffic is kind and most people are celebrating Christmas Day at home if this option tickles your sunset fancy.
7. Barley Beach
One of my personal top picks for a guaranteed gorgeous sunset a la beach is Barley Beach. Taken here by a friend of mine who essentially explores beaches for a non-official living, I fell in love with the vision, and I hope you do, too.
