Cult Beauty, a UK-based beauty retailer, conducted a study that analysed Instagram and Google search data to reveal the top 20 most beautiful beaches in the world right now.
Boulders Beach was ranked 19th, and while we Capetonians know it really deserved to be in the top three, it’s an accolade worthy of boasting about to acknowledge the Western Cape’s beautiful coastline.

Cult Beauty examined Instagram post data as well as the number of Google articles containing the word ‘beautiful’ for each beach.
An index was created with scores and attributed values based on the number of Instagram posts per beach location and the number of articles containing the beach name and the term ‘beautiful’.
Both columns were then indexed from highest to lowest, and the values were added together and then multiplied by 50 to give a total score out of 100.
For the rankings, 100 beaches were analysed, and the list of beaches was collected from this source here.
The current top three most beautiful beaches in the world, according to the study:
1. Venice Beach, California (United States)
According to the study, Venice Beach in California is the most beautiful beach in the world, with the most Instagram posts and more than 5.4 million articles online containing the word ‘beautiful.’
Its wide sands are lined with palm trees, and an iconic boardwalk and stunning mountain views add to the beauty of this beach.
2. Main Beach, Byron Bay (Australia)
Main Beach in Byron Bay, Australia, comes in second place and has the highest number of Google search results containing the word ‘beautiful,’ 6.92 million to be exact.
3. El Nido, Palawan (Philippines)
With 1.2 million Instagram posts and 3.9 million articles, El Nido in the Philippines ranks third. El Nido beaches are unquestionably gorgeous, and renowned for their turquoise waters, powdery white sand, lush green vegetation and natural beauty.
Another worthy mention:
19. Boulders Beach, Cape Town
Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is home to a charming colony of African penguins that live in this sheltered cove. Watching these fascinating creatures waddle and swim in the clear blue water is an experience that both couples and families will remember.
But that’s not all – the cove at Boulders Beach is also a great place to go for a swim in the ocean. The water here is relatively warm compared to other Cape Town beaches due to its sheltered location, making it an ideal place to soak up the sun and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery.
Boulders Beach is the ideal location for connecting with nature, relaxing on the sand or taking a refreshing swim.
With reference to the study, a spokesperson from Cult Beauty commented, ‘With worldwide travel back up and running, it seems that many people are on the lookout for the perfect summer holiday destination, and we all want to post the perfect beach shot on our social media accounts.
