Honeybees are essential for the survival of our planet’s ecosystem, and Honeybee Heroes in the Western Cape is working hard to raise awareness and support for these amazing creatures.
This sanctuary and education centre is championing the cause of bees by offering a range of programs and initiatives that allow individuals to get involved and make a difference.
One of the main ways to get involved is by adopting a hive. The Adopt-A-Hive program allows individuals from around the world to adopt a hive and receive regular updates on its progress, as well as the opportunity to visit it.
You’ll receive a personalised adoption kit, including six jars of raw farm honey, and the satisfaction of knowing that you’re doing your part to help the bees.
For those interested in beekeeping, Honeybee Heroes offers a unique experience where you can become a beekeeper for a day. The experience includes a “Basics of Beekeeping” workshop, suiting up in beekeeping gear and visiting some of the farm’s hives up close. The day ends with a delicious honey and cheese tasting.
Honeybee Heroes also offers beekeeping courses that teach participants how to create hives and support bee environments.
The Capensis honeybee subspecies, unique to the Western Cape, is one of the main focuses of the course. Honeybee Heroes believes that by supporting the health of the Capensis, they can contribute to biodiversity and uplift low-income households in South Africa by making ethical beekeeping a viable profession.

Another way to support the cause is by purchasing honey from Honeybee Heroes. The sanctuary produces honey that’s sold at various outlets, including their online store.
By choosing locally produced honey, consumers can make an eco- and health-minded food choice and help support South African beekeepers.
Honeybee Heroes also offers gift packages that make for thoughtful and unique presents. The packages include branded hives, raw honey, beekeeping experiences and even honey-based food and beauty items.
By giving the gift of a hive and honey, you’re not only making someone happy, but also contributing to the conservation of South African bee species.
