Giving the gifts of the art world to the people in your life who essentially live at art galleries might seem like a perfect pursuit in theory, but it can also seem like a daunting endeavour in practicality – and one that might make your wallet the its’ version of the scream.
None the less, there are ways to bring the artist’s worlds into our own that won’t break the bank if you only know where to look.
Cape Town has one such hidden gem, an online gallery that takes the intimidation out of in store purchasing, and has a curation of a price range as aesthetic as the art.
Unsung Art Gallery, the passion collaboration of three Cape Town-based entrepreneurs, originally launched in March 2014. It’s their online world that has bridged the space between artists and everyday curators.
“It’s a platform that works both for up-and-coming artists who find it difficult to get into exclusive galleries and everyday people, who now have the opportunity to buy original works without breaking the bank,” explains co-founder Jess Kramer.
Pop online and you’ll see a range of gorgeous local artworks for an entropy of artists – from sketches, ink, watercolour and other prints.
You can own pieces for the same price as a pair of sneakers or even as much as a reasonable bottle of wine, stretching from as little as R200.
The online store is as easy to navigate as a stroll through a well-known gallery and delivery is free nationwide.
Cruise online and pick your line of work. For those who love art, it is the ideal Christmas gift that you don’t have to worry about being duplicated.
