As one of Cape Town’s premier annual events, the Two Oceans Marathon not only offers two days of sweat, determination and downright fun but also the world’s most scenic race.
The 53rd edition of the Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon takes place today, Saturday, 15 April, and will be followed by the half marathon on Sunday morning. The main event features a 56km route along the Indian and Atlantic oceans, providing runners with a picturesque route along the Cape Peninsula. Spectators can also enjoy this view (and that of the runners), as can be seen in the Two Oceans Marathon’s Supporter Guide.

Starting at Main Road in Rondebosch
Though not the most scenic, supporters and runners alike can feel the electricity in the air, filled with nerves, anxious murmurs and the early morning chill. Supporters typically fill the route between Protea and Paradise Roads with coffee and words of encouragement.
Main Road between Rondebosch and Fish Hoek
The popular stretch between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay on the first 20km route is the best spot to get a view of the ocean. This mostly flat section of the route also has several coffee shops and restaurants along the way, offering spectators a place to relax once the runners have passed.

Between Fish Hoek and Kommetjie Road
Here spectators can even take a dip in the ocean or enjoy a relaxing session on the beach while still keeping an eye on the runners.

Main Road, Noordhoek
This gently undulating 4km section offers a stop for friends, family and spectators to cheer the runners on before they take on the first big climb of Chapman’s Peak.

Chapman’s Peak
The climb starts at Noordhoek Village before winding down along the mountain’s edge to Hout Bay. Runners can take in breath-taking views along the 28km mark. For this section, spectators can pack a picnic basket and take an early hike up the mountain to enjoy the views. Note that this area is not accessible by car.

Hout Bay and The Marathon Mark, to the top of Constantia Nek
Residents typically line the Hout Bay Main Road, starting from the bottom of Chapman’s Peak to the top of Constantia Nek. Spectators can fully emerse themselves in the race here, where fields and dirt tracks line the route. It is also the marathon mark, where runners need the most encouragement!

Ladies Mile and Parish Road at Constantia Nek
This is where half marathon runners prepare for their second climb of the day – up the steep Southern Cross Drive. Spectators can make their way to the Ladies Mile/Parish Road intersection to offer them support.

Southern Cross Drive
This area typically boasts cheering crowds and even bands, providing runners with a sea of support.
Cecelia Forest along Rhodes Drive
Here spectators can cheer the runners from a cool and shady viewing point. Though road closures will prevent travelling to and from the forest, residents can still take a stroll along the route. Half marathon runners will be preparing for their finish, while Ultra Marathon runners will need some extra encouragement.

Kirstenbosch Gardens
The leafy road going past the Kirstenbosch Gardens entrance offers spectators plenty of shade to give runners that extra boost before they take on Chet’s Hill.
The finish line at UCT, Rondebosch
This is where spectators can give their final cheers and fully experience the emotional rollercoaster of the event. Running club members can also cheer on their friends and catch a shuttle to the Club Gazebo area afterwards.
Important notes:
- Spectators must familiarise themselves with the road closures and parking spots, as well as how to walk to their chosen spectator spots.
- Steer clear of high congestion zones, especially if you need to leave without too much hassle.
- Due to the limited parking around the starting area, visitors will not be able to drive onto the campus on race day without the necessary parking accreditation.
- No parking is allowed on the M3 – doing so will result in being ticketed or even being towed.
- Several bins will be provided along the route. No littering will be tolerated – whether by spectators or runners.
- While picnics are allowed, spectators are not allowed to bring a braai, skottel or gas stove.
