With a new shorter route available this year, anticipation is mounting ahead of the 45th edition of the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Known for its 109km route circling the Cape Peninsula, the race will now include a new short route of 42km.
The addition of the shorter route will serve as a platform to attract new cyclists, junior riders and anyone looking to kick start their journey back into cycling.
The new route will also give those who want to be part of the event a chance to experience the joy of cycling, including Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis who gears up for his first 42km race.
“The City is thrilled to host the 45th edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. This is a flagship event on our calendar showcasing Cape Town’s unique tourism offering and ability to host world-class events,” said the mayor. “I’d like to wish all the cyclists the best of luck and challenge you to beat your best.”
“I look forward to joining you on the steep climbs while taking in the spectacular views of our beautiful city as we put our capabilities to the test. I want to thank all who have been involved in arranging this iconic race, which is a major contributor to our local economy, tourism, and job creation for residents.”
Meanwhile, mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith urged road users to plan accordingly with the event expected to cause extensive traffic disruptions.
“We would like to urge motorists to plan their routes accordingly or to avoid affected areas that will either be closed off or congested on Saturday and Sunday,” he said.
“The City is deploying emergency services including, Traffic Services, Law Enforcement, Fire and Rescue and Disaster Risk Management to work with other services to manage traffic flow, ensure all operations run smoothly and efficiently and prioritise the safety of riders and spectators on the day.”
Major road closures are planned as this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour has two routes. Temporary road closures will be implemented on Saturday, 11 March and Sunday, 12 March 2023.
Residents and motorists are reminded that a number of roads in and around the city bowl, around the DHL Stadium and Southern Suburbs will be affected.
- Helen Suzman Boulevard from Beach Rd to Traffic Circle will be closed from 2pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday.
- Chapman’s Peak will be closed from 6pm on Saturday until 6pm on Sunday.
- Nelson Mandela Boulevard incoming from Strand Street will be closed from 7pm on Saturday until 4pm on Sunday.
- M3 inbound, Hospital Bend Interchange and Nelson Mandela Boulevard will be closed on Sunday from 10am to 3pm
- Victoria Rd along Camps Bay, North and South bound will be closed from 7am until 6pm on Sunday.
- M4 Main Rd through Tokai, Lakeside, False Bay to Cape Point and Scarborough will be closed on Sunday between 5:45am until 2pm.
