In Africa, Cape Town emerged as the top city, surpassing Johannesburg and Pretoria, boasting 0.3 Meetup groups per 10 000 residents. The city presented a diverse array of options, ranging from dog-lover communities to meditation groups.
Cape Town secured the leading position in African cities with the strongest sense of community, with an impressive count of 153 Meetup groups. This equated to approximately 0.3 groups per 10 000 residents, taking into account the population size.

Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, secured the second position with a substantial total of 133 groups, while Pretoria claimed the third spot with 15 Meetup groups available for exploration.

Jago McKenzie, Business Management Director at Remitly, stressed the significance of a strong sense of community in enhancing one’s sense of belonging and purpose and preventing feelings of isolation and loneliness that can be common when relocating to a new place.
McKenzie noted that while community groups and meetups are not novel concepts, the means of accessing them have significantly evolved in the social media age. Platforms such as Meetup offer a convenient and efficient way to discover and connect with the most suitable groups for individuals.
