In honour of the 150th anniversary of Nokutela Mdima-Dube’s impactful journey, Spirituals Evening pays tribute to the pioneering songstress who left an indelible mark in the 19th century.

Mdima-Dube’s multifaceted contributions as a singer, composer, arranger, teacher, instrumentalist and conductor continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
Headlining this Women’s Month music event in Cape Town, Nonhlanhla Yende channels the spiritual and powerful music originally composed and arranged by Nokutela.
The concert’s programme features rare gems like ‘Inhlanhla Kwabashadayo,’ ‘Izigebengu,’ and ‘Ikhaya Lami’ – songs published in her groundbreaking 1911 songbook, ‘Amagama Abantu.’ Notably, this songbook stands as the first secular music literature published in an African language within South Africa.
