The coffee culture in Cape Town dominates the minds and mood swings of many locals. Naturally, this culture spills onto our dating scene. Cheaper than meals in the Mother City (for the most part) while still offering a slice of Cape Town’s tastebud scene – coffee dates are to Capetonians what wine dates are to Stellies locals.
If you want to find love then you know where the city is, as Matty Healy once mused, and in and around our city, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to coffee options.
Instead of spending two weeks trying to decide on ‘the best’ coffee spot of all, a way to truly immerse yourself in the coffee lover’s world is to get a little taste of different coffee imaginings. It’s basically bar hopping, but with coffee spots!
Here are some coffee picks in Cape Town to add to your coffee hopping list:
Espresso Lab Microroasters
A boutique roastery that has been in the business since 2009, Espresso Lab Microroasters are a speciality coffee roastery living in the hub of bohemian culture and creativity: Woodstock. Populated with state of the art coffee lab equipment, Espresso Lab oozes decor that will make you and your date feel like you’ve stepped into Dexter’s coffee-concocted laboratory – down to the periodic table styled menus.

Ground Art Caffe
Not only is Ground Art Caffe home to some of the best coffee in the city, but it is also a tiny art gallery, hence the fitting title. Small, intimate and surrounded by art, Ground Art Caffe is the perfect place to hop to if you seek a beautiful space to talk for hours over a delightfully prepared cuppa’ – and appreciate the art on exhibition as you appreciate the art of the human you’re enjoying it all with. Gallery and coffee date in one? Ground Art Caffe understands the assignment.

The Strangers Club
A hidden gem in Greenpoint, the Strangers Club may well take you and your date from stranger status to the next level with the ease of their peaceful setting. Bonus? They’re full of surprises as all the best-hidden gems are: from a boutique-style clothing pop-up to the art features and beautiful gardens to boast. In terms of their coffee, The Strangers Club’s in-the-know barista will serve up fine cups of your coffee wishes, and while you and your date enjoy your coffee choices and each other’s company, you’ll get to do it all at a local favourite.

Naked Coffee
Time to teleport to the Atlantic Seaboard for some freshly brewed coffee and add some ocean-scented air to the mix while you’re at it. Naked coffee is one of my personal favourite coffee spots in Seapoint writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt, and this is largely due to the calm energy Naked exudes and for their vanilla-infused cappuccino and generous servings.
It may sound like a nudist coffee shop, but in reality, it’s a gorgeously dressed diamond of a spot. It’s also incredibly close to the promenade, so if you’d like to take your coffees to go and stroll romantically, take the offer from the tastiest table and get romanticising.
