Prepare to embark on a brand-new and unparalleled experience that will transport you deep into Earth’s past. EARTHBOX, at Lourensford Wine Estate, is set to take you on a sensory journey like no other.
This immersive space promises to be a geological and engineering marvel, offering visitors a rare opportunity to connect with the Earth’s ancient history.
EARTHBOX is not your typical attraction. It’s a vast underground chamber measuring 8×24 metres, nestled 5 metres below the Earth’s surface. Stepping into this space is like entering a time capsule that dates back an astonishing 560 million years.
The raw earth walls, the textures and the scents create an almost otherworldly atmosphere that stands in contrast to our fast-paced modern lives.

The project is a testament to human ingenuity, engineering and a deep appreciation for the Earth’s history. Extensive planning went into its creation, involving engineers, geologists, environmentalists and artists.
One notable name behind this venture is engineer Henry Fagan, known for projects like the Boomslang Walkway at Kirstenbosch, which integrates astonishingly with the natural surroundings.
EARTHBOX promises a range of experiences. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff or someone seeking tranquility, the journey has many factors. Guided meditations and geology audio tours allow you to connect with the Earth’s ancient stories. Additionally, daily yoga and pilates sessions offer a holistic wellness experience.
For those who appreciate the arts, the last Sunday of each month features a music series with local artists performing in this unique underground setting. You can also indulge in culinary delights with select dining experiences curated by renowned chefs.

Once you arrive at the site, a small pavilion offers a selection of carefully-curated, locally-sourced merchandise. You can take in the undulating landscape designed with excavated earth before entering the chamber through a curved entrance in the ground.
EARTHBOX encourages a cellphone-free experience to fully immerse yourself in the serenity of the space. Inside, you’re free to explore, reflect and appreciate the Earth’s ancient wonders.
The space welcomes families, but due to the quiet nature of the space, it’s suitable for children aged five and older. The chamber can be dimly lit or even dark at times, so it may not be suitable for children who are afraid of the dark.
