Get ready for an exciting adventure through the stunning Tokara estate, located in the heart of Stellenbosch. On 22 April, the renowned family wine and olive farm will open its doors to the public for the annual Rare Plant Fair and Autumn Open Garden.
As you stroll through the peaceful walks dotted with sculptures by local artists, take in the breathtaking views of the large garden dam. The indigenous garden, textures in the cork oak forest, and the tantalising fragrances wafting from the terraces of the picking garden will captivate your senses.
But that’s not all – the latest addition to the farm’s collection of natural wonders is the indigenous Adamastor Moss Garden. This serene space, inspired by the Zen gardens of Japan, is 100% local, with all the rocks and moss originating within a few kilometres of the estate.
Created by international moss gardener Gert van Tonder, it blends local sandstone and granite with indigenous mosses and fynbos to recreate the ambiance of an ancient Japanese garden.
As you explore the garden, you’ll also discover other hidden gems like the inspiring vegetable garden, wetlands, and the tranquil mountain stream flowing into soothing lily ponds.
If you’re a gardening enthusiast, you’ll be thrilled by the wide variety of plants on sale, from indigenous flora such as fynbos and proteas to the more exotic varieties. And, of course, no visit to Tokara would be complete without sampling their elegant wines and award-winning extra virgin olive oils.
The Tokara Rare Plant Fair and Autumn Open Garden 2023 runs from 8am to 4pm, with a nominal entry fee of R50 for adults. All proceeds will go to support a local charity. Children under 10 get free entry, so bring the whole family for a fun day out.
