Wine and walk is the new wine and dine. A new guided tour through the Constantia Wine Valley is an absolute favourite for a few reasons. It ticks a lot of boxes, something to consider before choosing an activity from the hundreds of options in the Mother City. Beautiful scenery? Check. Delicious (and award-winning) wine? Double-check. Getting the low-down on each of the historic wine farms? You betcha. Food to match? Of course!

Constantia Wine Walk is not only a fun outing (which it seriously is), it’s a fabulous opportunity to learn more about how Cape Town’s booming wine industry started. Your professional guide, Matt Sterne, knows everything from what you would read in history books, to the juicy (admittedly unconfirmed) rumours about steamy love affairs, illegal horse riding on what is now our beloved Ladies Mile and the passionate entrepreneurs that gave rise to viticulture in South Africa.
Already in the 1700s, South African wine was a sought-after delicacy collected by European nobles and royals. Did you know that famous writers like Jane Austen and Charles Dickens referenced the wine from Constantia in their work? Napoleon Bonaparte supposedly drank a bottle a day while in exile on St Helena island. Wild, I tell you. ‘Great Gatsby-esque parties and tragic fires, Amazonian warriors and freed slaves who went on to own their own wine farms – the story of Constantia is as unique as its wine,’ says Matt.
The tour kicks off at Groot Constantia (the oldest wine farm in the country) and takes a comfortable meander through the vineyards on the way to Klein Constantia. A refreshing wine tasting satisfies the senses and on you go to the final destination, Buitenverwachting, where more wine and delectable platters are served.
This 7-km walk will traverse private trails not otherwise accessible to the public, and show off the region’s sublime views like no brochure can, making this an absolute must-do.
