The fossil site of Langebaanweg is located in the West Coast Fossil Park, approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Cape Town and is world-renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved fossil faunal remains.
A national and international team of researchers are currently working to unravel the fascinating and unique history of fossils from the West Coast Fossil Park and attempting to recreate the environment and climate of the west coast some 5 million years ago.
This site is one of the only destinations in the world where you can see fossils in the same ground where they were discovered. A visit to this destination also includes access to walking routes, biking trails, a fossil cast painting session and mock dig sites for children.
The highlight of a visit to this location however is the chance to see the fossils of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes and the many other exotic animals which inhabited the west coast area some 5 million years ago.
The museum further displays the fossils of over 300 species of animals which were discovered in the area. Reportedly, many of the species have not yet been found anywhere else on the planet.
A visit to this location also allows for access to a delectable restaurant which serves budget-friendly and filling meals.
