The annual Wavescape Film Festival showcases a wave of exhilarating surfing short films from all over the world. This year’s edition includes:
Changing Tempo
A beautifully crafted mini-biopic following Cape Town surfer Mikey February’s journey across Africa after leaving the pro tour to become a free surfer.
In just 15 minutes, the film showcases his exceptional skill and connection to the cultures of the Wild Coast, Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal, Mozambique and Angola while blending indigenous lore, picturesque landscapes and surfing.
Where We Thrive
A 34-minute documentary celebrating Kommetjie, a once-isolated village turned surf mecca. Narrated by endurance runner Ryan Sandes, the short film explores the town’s deep connection to big-wave surfing and adventure sports.
Surrounded by the Atlantic’s wild expanse, Kommetjie has fostered generations of ocean lovers and mountaineers. More than just a local tribute, the film is an ode to Cape Town’s rugged beauty, weaving together trail running, surfing, diving and paragliding.
The Source
A stunning 32-minute travelogue following pro surfer Koa Smith from Hawaii to South Africa. Expecting an adrenaline-fuelled surf film, he instead embarks on a deeply human journey, discovering the need to slow down.
A chance encounter in the Deep South shifts his focus to connection, nature and introspection, turning his adventure into a powerful meditation on simplicity – something we could all use in these times.
