If you’re seeking a charitable way to make the most of your Saturday, TEARS Animal Rescue’s Pimp My Shelter event may be just what you’re looking for. Make a meaningful impact in the lives of shelter animals by lending a hand in sprucing up their kennels.

During the event, volunteers will roll up their sleeves and dive into various projects around the kennels and cattery. These tasks include general improvements, painting, varnishing, DIY projects and other beautification efforts to transform the shelter into a warm and welcoming home for the animals.

Help transform the TEARS shelters by picking a Pimp My Shelter project below:
Project 1 – Painting
What to take along:
- Dulux exterior ‘Zodiac Night’, colour mixing code: 70GG 13/323
- Paintbrush
- Paint tray and roller
- Optional extras: Turpentine and white enamel paint
Project 2 – Varnishing
What to take along:
- Dark-stain wood varnish (teal, oak or imbuia)
- Paintbrush
- Optional extras: Turpentine
Project 3 – Living Pallet Wall
What to take along:
- Plants (ground covers, succulents etc)
- Compost or potting soil
- Hand spade
- Scissors
- Optional extras: Staple gun (to create plant baskets out of dog food bags)
Project 4 – Gardening with Dogs
What to take along:
- Plants (ground covers, succulents, aloes, honeysuckle, bougainvillea and other hardy creepers, cuttings for propagation)
- Compost or potting soil
- Optional extras: Gardening tools (hand spade, garden fork, gardening gloves, etc)
Project 5 – Gardening with Cats
What to take along:
- Waterwise plants (ground covers, succulents, aloes, cuttings for propagation, etc.)
- Compost or potting soil
- Optional extras: Gardening tools (hand spade, garden fork, secateurs, gardening gloves, black bags, etc.)
Project 6 – Cat Jungle Gyms
What to take along:
- Contact adhesive (and brush to apply the adhesive)
- Stanley knife or scissors
- Twine or rope
- Staple gun, hammer, pliers
- Clout nails (20mm)
- Optional extras: Small rugs or carpet remnants, vinyl offcuts and any cat toys that can be attached to the cat scratchers.
Project 7 – DIY Projects
How you can help:
If you’re good at DIY, can wield a power tool or are a skilled carpenter, builder, welder or maintenance person, TEARS would love to hear from you! There are a variety of projects for you to tackle and they can assign the perfect project based on your skill set.
