Greenpop together with Urban Harvest has launched a programme to create a food garden with an aim to empower South African households with little food security.
The two organisations have hope that the Family Food Garden project provides a solution to this ongoing problem in South Africa. The project supports individuals and groups through an in-person home food gardening workshop, distribution of Family Garden Pods, and 12 months of food gardening training and support via WhatsApp.
By increasing knowledge about home food gardening, cooking, nutrition as well as entrepreneurship, individuals and communities have the opportunity of becoming more food secure and financially independent.
The Family Garden Pod is not only a compact, self-contained vegetable gardening system, but also a composting worm farm.
Did you know?
Each Family Food Garden Pod features its own built-in worm-farm!
Earthworms are useful because:
- They break down dead and decaying organic matter (like leaves and food scraps) and turn it into rich soil.
- When they eat, earthworms leave behind castings that are a very valuable type of fertiliser.
- They help to increase the amount of air and water that gets into the soil.
- They help to “turn” the soil—bringing down organic matter from the top and mixing it with the soil below.
- They create a very useful “worm-tea” that can be used to feed your veggies.
This project enables people to grow fresh produce in small urban spaces, while also turning kitchen waste into valuable compost and organic fertiliser.
