Dance of the La Gumas: Revolution, Rumba and Romance
In celebration of the centenary of Justin Alexander La Guma’s birthday, Dance of the La Gumas: Revolution, Rumba and Romance tells the remarkable story of a heritage that was almost buried by the bannings and exile of the apartheid state.
The play follows the tumultuous journey of Alex and Blanche La Guma as they travelled the world with their two sons, Eugene and Barto, taking the fight for justice in South Africa to far-flung corners of the globe. Throughout it all, their love for each other and their joie de vivre – the dancing, the singing and passionate living – shines through.
Starring Elton Landrew and Rehane Abrahams, La Guma’s memories, stories and harrowing experiences are brought to life with elegance and style by playwrights Basil Appollis and Sylvia Vollenhoven in this back-by-popular-demand production.
