If you’re looking for a calm but beautiful hiking adventure to try this winter, then Elephant’s Eye Cave deserves a spot on your calendar.
Named after its eye-like appearance on the mountain portion that resembles the beautiful member of the Big 5, the Elephant’s Eye hike is as popular as it is largely because of its beauty and mystique.
Your Elephant’s Eye journey can start at Silver Mine Nature Reserve, where you can zoom your way to its beginning in your car via Ou Kaapse Weg cutting out the steeper version of the trail, or take the road less travelled and start from Tokai Arboretum.
The difficulty of the hike depends on the hiker. Experienced hikers will find either route rather easy, while newbie hikers can bank on it being a great introduction to the world of hiking at a moderate level.
You can expect tantalising views of Cape Town, clusters of pine trees, a running river to take a break and of course the fabulous cave where you can sit and enjoy the great lighting for all those photos you’ll take, and the flora that reside there.
Two awesome factor’s about this hike is that your doggos are invited to join in (on a leash) and kids can do it too.
Winter earmarks a great time to tackle this gentle beast because in summer the steeper parts will have you sweating, and it’s far busier, filled with tourists and others seeking the cave’s wonders.
The hike is roughly 7.6km and a dog walking activity card is necessary. Don’t forget to bring some cash to pay the conservation fee (R35 for an adult and R15 for a child).
