Muizenberg’s iconic colourful huts are getting a new lease on life and a fresh coat of paint. The Beach Hut Trust has been hard at work restoring the Eastern section of these famous beach huts with the additional feature of ramps included, which will ensure accessibility for everyone.
Spearheading this initiative is Angela Gorman, who recently indicated that they started a new campaign on Tuesday, 28 December to help raise funds to restore more huts in 2022, reports News24.
To help save these iconic beach huts, the public is being asked to donate R100 with the idea being that anyone who works or has a job will be able to afford it. The campaign will continue until Easter Weekend, Gorman stated.
In an attempt to restore the beach huts, the City of Cape Town was quoted a hefty sum in 2019, a whopping R800 000. However, the City opted to do the necessary repairs itself, including painting and cleaning at a cost of R110 000 – this is excluding labour.
“We are raising funds to buy supplies and to save the Muizenberg Beach huts from disintegration.”
The public’s response has been incredible, with many eager to help where they can by donating or sacrificing time to help paint the beach huts.
A main attraction when visiting Cape Town, Gormon reiterates that these huts cannot fall apart and be destroyed.
“We have to save them. This campaign is to crowdfund to raise money and awareness for just that.”
