In honour and support of nurses and their indispensable contributions to the well-being of our country, the fifth annual Night Run to Honour Nurses is back and will be taking over Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade this September.
What better motivation to lace up those takkies and join in on a seven-kilometre community night run than an exceptional cause?

Hosted by The Exceptional Nurse Campaign, the aim of the Night Run to Honour Nurses is to raise awareness of the critical shortage of professional nurses in our country and to raise money for bursaries so that more people can study and become exceptional nurses.
‘Nurses not only form the backbone, but the beating heart of our Healthcare System,’ says Sister Teresa Basson, whose passion led to the birth of The Exceptional Nurse Campaign in 2015 after witnessing the desperate situation in our public hospitals and community clinics.

‘The main reason for the crisis in SA is that 50% of our nurses are over the age of 50 and will be retiring within the next ten to 15 years,’ explains Sister Basson. ‘Each year in SA over 9 000 nurses retire, meaning we are losing 9 000 nurses annually in our country.’
‘Unfortunately, due to a shortage of Government funding for Nurse Training and qualified Nurse Educators, we only have capacity, as a country, to train 3 000 nurses each year. With only 3 000 new nurses coming into the profession each year, we lose a total of 6 000 nurses annually.’
The Night Run events create a healthy public platform to create public awareness and to urge government to address the current healthcare crisis and train more nurses.
The seven-kilometre night route that participants will be running is symbolic of the 7-7 shifts our nurses tirelessly work.
Entries cost R130 per adult and R70 for children under the age of 12 with all proceeds being donated to the Exceptional Nurse Campaign Bursary Fund.
‘Nurses play an essential role in the medical profession and health care system, and we hope that through the work of The Exceptional Nurse Campaign and events that we host, we can change the tide of negative sentiment by highlighting all of the “exceptional nurses” that help create beautiful miracles every day,’ added Sister Basson.
