Cape Town-based charity, Ladles of Love has launched a new sustainability and urban farm programme called “Feed the Soil” on World Food Day, October 16 at the Sea Point Promenade.
The programme was created with an aim to address the challenges that urban farmers and community gardens in the Cape Peninsula face. After a year of research, visiting markets and urban gardens around the Mother City, they realised that the biggest challenge was the quality of soil that allows them to grow fresh nutritious produce.
They recently partnered with Zero To Landfill Organics who are experts and passionate about recycling organic waste and who will assist by turning the waste collected from suburban households into compost.
The campaign focuses on raising awareness of the need to support the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
Ladles of Love founder, Danny Diliberto explains “Feed the Soil aims to promote sustainable development in Cape Town by providing nutrient rich compost to urban farmers, addressing both the need for “zero-to-landfill” organic waste and the need for Urban Famers to enrich their soil in order to grow nutritious produce and find a route to market.”
“This compost will be delivered to urban farmers in impoverished communities to help provide produce to use in their soup kitchens and to sell at the markets,” he adds.
On World Food Day, Ladles of Love will have a pop-up store on the Sea Point Promenade next to the Pavilion where you can buy your organic waste kits for R200, or you can pre-order on www.ladlesoflove.org.za and collect from the pop-up store between 10am – 2pm. You will also be able to purchase fresh, organic vegetables – grown from the farmers you supply waste to.
To form part of the new ecosystem from collecting the waste to buying fresh new produce grown from it, the public can get involved by buying a kit on www.ladlesoflove.org.za, which consists of:
- 1 x 5 litre Organic Waste Bin
- 1 x 25 litre Storage Bin
- 1 x bag of Sawdust
- 1 x bag of Bokashi
Once you have your kit, you can then collect your organic waste (food scraps) into your bin. Thereafter, meet Danny and the team every Wednesday between 8am – 12pm, starting October 27 2021, at the special allocated meeting point to drop off your full bin and swop it for a clean, empty one. The meeting point will be a one stop drop, swop and shop space.
