There are few activities more exciting for an adventure and nature enthusiast than a steam-train ride through the countryside. Embrace an array of breathtaking views as you ascend Sir Lowry’s Pass with fynbos-covered hills and stark mountainous outcrops.
In a trip that combines scenic beauty with culinary delight and award-winning experience, the Ceres Rail Company offers guests a magnificent return trip to the esteemed Elgin Railway Market aboard its historic passenger train.
The thunderous arrival of this 80-year-old steam locomotive is a sight in itself and a must-see for adults and children alike.

The scenic route
Your three-and-a-half-hour journey begins at the Harbour Bridge Platform in Foreshore and winds through Cape Town and its surrounds until it reaches Sir Lowry’s Pass.
Arriving at the foot of the pass, the train embarks on an epic climb up one of the steepest railway lines in South Africa. Cresting the peak, the train snakes its way into the Elgin Valley before arriving at the Elgin Railway Market.

Arriving at the market: The gateway to the Elgin Valley
The market offers an array of gourmet food vendors serving everything from fragrant curries and Mediterranean cuisine to delectable sweet treats, craft beers, local wines, ciders and gin.
This eclectic Steampunk Art Deco market was once an old apple warehouse. Built-in the 1940s, this renovated space is rich in culture and history.
While you enjoy the live music, explore the various bespoke craft stalls selling a range of goods including jewellery, leather goods and art. There’s also a designated play area for your kiddies to expend their energy.

Whether you’re looking for a day trip to explore a unique side of Cape Town, a family escapade or a chance to experience new cuisine and scenery, this journey promises an unforgettable experience.
