I’d like to preface this article by stating that I am not a cyclist. What I do know is that bicycles are probably some of the priciest pieces of equipment on this planet, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido.
A good quality bicycle will cost you anywhere between R10k to R40k, which will obviously also depend on the branding. With all this factored in, it would only make sense that you would stop at nothing to ensure that your investment is kept safe, especially when it comes to parking your bicycle on the streets of South Africa, where the stickiest of fingers reside.
So, imagine the laughs that followed when one student, expensive bicycle and all, decided to do the bare minimum when it came to making sure no one made off with their money -basically.
Using the cheapest lock they could find and “securing” it around one of the most unreliable pillars on the Stellenbosch campus, one bicycle managed to escape the thieves (this time), but not the laughter of the internet.
Stellenbosch University took to their Facebook page to send out a little warning to all bicycle users, with the caption was just as hilarious as the image:
“Who’s bicycle is this? We don’t know who needs to hear this, but having a fancy bicycle and a cheap lock and chain just makes no sense. Lock up your bike inside the bike sheds on campus and ensure that you lock it properly using a U-lock,” the post read.
Moral of the story: secure your bike on a pillar that doesn’t make it easy for thieves to simply pick up your bike and walk away. If that fails, try and avoid the finger-pointing of the internet.
