Cape Town’s police K9s never stop working to keep us safe. These skilled pooches are crucial members of the police force, and embody all that it means to serve our community with fierce loyalty and absolute dedication.

On Friday, the Metro Police K9 unit was able to take their furry partners on a special outing, thanks to Kirstenbosch. The iconic National Botanical Gardens opened its gates to give these hard-working pooches the best day out: a morning on their mountain trails.

“Our 20 service K9s have undergone special training along with their handlers, training that takes several months,” the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.

“It is this relationship that translates into the positive outcome we are so often seeing from this unit. Our K9s are more than just dogs, they are partners in our fight against crime but also a partner to an officer in the unit.
“Our K9 unit is readily used to support SAPS in their crime prevention and detection operations. This is why the City is earnestly seeking ways to expand this unit to increase the valuable component of K9s in our service,” Smith concludes.

To the people and pooches that keep Cape Town safe – thank you!
