What’s Muizenberg Beach without its colourful huts? Still an iconic beach, but it simply wouldn’t be Muizenberg without them.
The refurbishment of the Muizenberg Beach Huts has been completed ahead of an expected booming festive season where locals and visitors will be seen flocking to this tourist attraction. The popular landmark has been under refurbishment since last year.

The Muizenberg Huts Refurbishment Project was a result of a partnership between the City of Cape Town and the excellent work done by the Friends of the Muizenberg Huts.
‘It was wonderful to see the completed restoration, just in time for what will be a record festive tourism season. I must thank the Friends of the Muizenberg Huts for their partnership to preserve this proud Cape Town tourism icon,’ said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The R5.9 million-budgeted final phase, which commenced on 18 September saw the project refurbish ten single huts and 26 double huts and be completed on schedule before the start of the holidays.
The scope of work included:
- The replacement of the ground floor joists, timber bearers and roof rafters with treated timber
- The replacement of the sidewall panels and roof covering with Nutec cladding
- The reconstruction of the timber staircase and the installation of concrete bases for the staircase posts.
- The reconstruction of timber seating benches inside the beach huts
- The replacement of all steel bolted connections with hot-dipped galvanised bolts and plates
- Wood treatment of all timber members, repainting the side cladding and roof covering
‘As Capetonians, let’s take good care of this special heritage symbol when using the huts,’ added the mayor. ‘When we take pride in our tourism offering, our city reaps the economic and job creation benefits.
Hill-Lewis visited the newly completed huts yesterday, 12 December, together with Councillor Patricia van der Ross, MMC for community services and health.

Hill-Lewis said on X that he had promised his team that if the refurbishment was completed by December, he’d go surfing to celebrate.
Suffice it to say, the promise was kept and fun was had at Surfer’s Corner.
